Hot Dogs and Fireworks! New Castle has been known both as the “Hot Dog Capital of the World” and as the “Fireworks Capital of America.” Early in the 20th century, Greek immigrants sold their soon-to-be famous chili dogs in restaurants they established. Two local fireworks companies with hot international reputations—Pyrotechnic Industries and Zambelli Internationale—lit the fuse for the “fireworks capital” honor.

And Another Thing: You’ve heard of Tin Pan Alley in New York? Well, New Castle was once the “tin plate capital of the world”—informally, of course. In the 1890s, the region comprised several powerful manufacturers and became the largest single producer of tin plate in the world. Since the much-in-demand material was shipped nearly everywhere, storage needs were very short term and apparently not a problem.
